Oasis - Don't Believe the Truth

27 July 2005 19:06 pm

The first reaction on hearing that Oasis were returning after a relative quite period of recent time for the band was "oh god, why are they coming back? They had a good run but they should just let it drop." Actually that is what someone else said and I nodded along.

Fact is though that it is usually pretty accurate. It's often bands just coming back to relive former glories. Sometimes they get it right though, indeed a band returning often produces great work. For instance AC/DC didn't record Back in Black until after their lead singer died.

I'm getting off topic and secondly I might be seen to be comparing Back in Black to Oasis's latest album. I'm not. But what I will say is that Oasis's return is far from a shadow of it's former past – it's a damn good album.

As anyone who listens to the radio in the UK will know, the album is headed up, at least my consensus by the track Lyla. Along with tracks like The Meaning of Soul the bulk of the album produces simple yet affective riffs which defined the sound of Oasis throughout the 90's.

Not that the more complex riffs and drum sequences are any less Oasis. Part of the Queue produces a beautifully English sounding track and to boot it is supported by lyrics that set the kind of scene you expect from the band.

Skimming through the album is can be easy to miss some of it although it is unmistakably Oasis. Each track manages to provide something different while still sticking to their unique style – I will my favourite bands could do this.

Before I heard this I wouldn't have thought Oasis would ever reclaim their former glory but I’m not sure now. This could easily be seen as some of their strongest work so far and while I am sure many would disagree, few would dispute that the band has done excellent work here.
