Gorillaz first stormed onto the scene in 2001 with their self-titled album mostly fuelled by the hit single Clint Eastwood. Since then they had Laika Come Home in 2002 and re-emerged this year with Demon Days in a similar situation to the first album but this time driven by the fit single Feel Good Inc.
It is by far the hit of the album, I haven't seen anything else being used on the promo trailers and the song was already recognisable from its use on the iPod adverts. The problem is, the rest of the album cannot keep up.
Although to offer some credit, the rest of the album does not deviate from the slightly dark muted feel of the album. There are no real bad songs because it all blurs into one big image, it's a very sold album.
Once again the group has managed to produce the kind of in-song fusion to an even greater extent then they managed with their first album. Songs like Last Living Souls and indeed Feel Good Inc stand testament to this.
Despite its melon collie themes that could well have come from an R and B version of The Smashing Pumpkins, the riffs are catchy enough to provide entertainment for a wider audience. Real appreciation will most likely be constrained to existing fans and on a wider scale indie fans though that doesn't mean everyone else can't try. I did.
I still believe certain parts of the album are slightly too cartoony as to detract from the image of the overall album but once you can get into the bulk of the songs you are in safe terroritory.
The mood of the album dictates that you are probably not going to play it to death so it should have a pretty long life in your player albeit for limited periods at a time. It's a new direction from their first album but existing fans will go wrong buying it and checking out the streams for it is worth the time even if you're not.
